I currently help my friend and assist her to documenting a performance show (requested by the performing and screen arts at Unitec), which covers the preparations, rehearsal and some behind the scenes.
Although I was dragged into the documentary process by my friend, I find out that there are lots of things I can learn.
The director - Pedro (a Lecturer in Theater Studies) who creates a drama with three actors. On one hand, it is part of the Unitec research project, on the other hand, it is also his personal project to investigate the possibility of running a theater along with some certain systems in a commercial way.
When he trains the three actors, his director role appears in order to illustrate the objective point of view and give the feedback to the actors. (Now I know how important the director is.) He can observe every little difference from the actors' gestures, and drive the actors to do the best in their performance.
Yesterday, he explained one theory about our body gestures is that, whoever is doing some gestures while talking, the gestures would have punctuations among, which is akin a article, it much have some punctuations in between its sentences, then these sentences interweave to be a complex article. Gesture is same, and it will follow our sentences to occur while we speak.
I never think of this issue in terms of photographing people (interview with someone or in photojournalism). The gesture theory sounds fundamental, but it is true. This points out the rhythm of our body language is based on the timing of the speak. If you get the rhythm or the melody, it will help to take the decisive moment easily.
I'm enlightened.
