The ideal of Abstract Expressionist painting is dealing with the artist's subconsciousness. When the painter is painting this kind of artwork, the artist is required to think and act simultaneously in order to reveal the author's subconscious act. When you look at Jackson Pollock's paintings, or watching his painting process on youtube, he painted quickly without 'thinking' about the final outcome. he once said that while he was painting, as if he entered his subconscious zone and he couldn't feel his existence too. so therefore, the Abstract Expressionist painting is a self-hypnotized piece of artwork.
Lee Hadwin's sleep-paintings are different but they have the similarity with Jackson Pollock, not the painting style, but the concept of making art. Lee his a parasomnia, which is that he paints while he is asleep. If that is true ( I believe it), then he must stay in his subconsciousness to produce artwork. So I believe Lee Hadwin's artworks can be classified to Abstract Expressionist.
As far as these two cases be concerned, each of those has two different personalities - the painting one (in subconsciousness) and normal one (in consciousness).
Recently, I read a new that reporting a 2-year-old Australian artist having an exhibition in Hong Kong. I am interested about her works so I check that out on the internet. It is undoubted that she has the talent of painting. But there is one thing I am totally disagree, which is her parents classify Aelita Andre's artworks as Abstract Expressionism. Because she is in her consciousness while she paints. How do I know? well, I don't believe a 2year old child has the ability to control her subconscious part to paint. Also, I think a 2year old child can only do what she likes with no complicated thought. In other words, she doesn't even know what her subject matter is, so I don't think she is Abstract Expressionist artist.
