Memories of King Kowloon-Tsang Tsou Choi | 九龍皇帝的文字樂國-曾灶財

Tsang Tsou Choi (1921-2007) is notorious for his "artwork" - graffiti style of calligraphy, who explicitly claimed he was the King of Kowloon. There is a rumor saying that his had read his family archive and believed that he was the legitimate King to have the ownership of Kowloon peninsula from his father. As a result, He did over 50 thousands graffiti all around Kowloon and Hong Kong Island to disseminate his "Royal" messages and Majesty.

"The King is a paradox. His writings are crude and primitive, but genuine of his own naiveté." Quote in the exhibition, arising the context of the paradox side. It always has debates that could his calligraphy be classified as artwork? Well some people who treat it as part of the Hong Kong culture would love and appreciate his works. But for those people from the commercial side such as the private property corporations, this kind of 'propaganda' is definitely not welcomed. The corporate manager would never like any kind of graffiti appear on the building walls. However, this exhibition is held in one of the largest property company, and that synchronises the word it uses - "paradox".

Anyhow, this show is curated and the place is spacious. It is awesome that Hong Kong has a corporate runs gallery like this.
